Steve Staples presented this cup to our branch and is a former Royal Marine who now works at the school of boatbuilding. He acquired some genuine HMS Victory oak and decided to turn it into a goblet to be used on Trafalgar night (21st October).The idea is that the loyal toast (of Rum.... Nelson's blood) is toasted using the goblet.
I suggested that we asked the Lyme Museum to keep it . It deserves to be seen.

Branch Training Courses - Based in Dorset

An invitation to all Branch members

It is planned to hold two 2 day courses in Dorset in October.

The Branch Treasurer's Course is planned for 6th - 7th October 2010.
Anyone in the Branch who might be considering taking on the Treasurer's duties or deputising is welcome to apply.

The Branch Management Course is Planned for 30 - 31st October 2010.
This course is suitable for any committee member or any member of the Branch who might consider serving on the Committee in the future.
Both courses start at 0900 and finish at 1800 although the second day is usually shorter.

I can personally recommend the Branch Management Course as I attended one 2 years ago with the Membership Secretary. The course dispelled many commonly held beliefs about the Legion and explained the workings of the Royal Charter in detail.

If you requre further details about the courses or wish to attend please contact me ASAP and no later than 1st September.

Pub Nights

The monthly pub social evenings were not as successful as hoped for. This coupled with changes to the work patterns of some of the Committee means that there will no longer be a regular monthly get together at the Nag's Head. Further events may be planned in the future including the Annual Quiz night which will be held in May.

The Royal British Legion has updated the 2003 Royal Charter. The new version is Version 6 dated 31 October 2009. There are a large number of important changes. Members should make themselves familair with the latest version. A summary of the changes may be obtained from the Secretary.

This year’s Remembrancetide events begin on Friday 30th October with our annual Street collection which continues on Saturday. Our Festival of Remembrance this year is being held at the Woodmead Hall on Saturday 31st October at 7.30 p.m. Please make a note of the change of venue and day. We hope this change will encourage you to attend in view of the parking facilities.

The Festival will be compered by Lt. Cdr. David Manners who introduces some familiar and unfamiliar faces to our production, including the Lymelights Theatre School, Nicky Harwood, Brian Rattenbury, Lyme Regis Lifeboat Crew and of course Lyme Regis Town Band.

Tickets are this year £3 and are available on the door or at Cauli & Flowers, Broad Street.

All of us have seen the emotional TV images of our servicemen’s bodies being repatriated at RAF Lyneham and the dignified response from the people of Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire. Every town, I’m sure, feels the same when they see such images and Lyme Regis’ Festival of Remembrance is one of our ways of showing our respect for all servicemen and women both past and present.

I encourage all people in our community to come and fly the flag on Saturday October 31st. “OUR FORCES DESERVE YOUR SUPPORT”.

OTHER DATES

Saturday 7th November:- 10.15 am Lyme Regis Cemetery (Kingsway Entrance). Laying of wreaths & crosses. Followed by laying of wreaths & crosses at the Polish Memorial, Anning Road.

Sunday 8th November:- Remembrance Sunday Parade & Service. Assemble at Langmoor Gardens 2.40pm for 3.00pm Church Service. It is hoped that this will be amongst one of the biggest parades ever seen in the town and all organisations in the town are welcome to attend. To date we have serving representatives from all armed forces intending to take part in uniform. Should an organisation wish to purchase a wreath please contact our new Poppy appeal organiser Tracy Hodder on 01297-445912.

More details can be found at mapthefallen.org/. This gives a very graphical reminder that the Legion is still needed to support the families of those who have paid the ultimate price.

Royal British Legion ventures out!

In a continued drive to involve our growing membership the Lyme Regis branch has organised a visit to Bovington Tank Museum on Saturday 4th April. This day is the 70th Anniversary of the formation of the Royal Armoured Corps and displays and other commemorative events are taking place and will be of interest to all servicemen and women whichever service they belonged.

A coach is provided and with entrance fee, the cost is £15.

CANCELLED - The Festival of Remembrance will take place on Sunday 26th October from 19:30 hrs at the Marine Theatre - CANCELLED

On Saturday the 8th of November at 10:15 hrs (Please note the earlier start time) we will pay our respects to the fallen at the Lyme Regis Cemetery and lay poppies. Join us inside the cemetery gates at the Kingsway entrance. Later the same day at 11:00 hrs we will pay our respects at the Polish Air Force Memorial on Anning Road.

On Sunday 9th November the Remembrance Day Parade will leave Langmoor Gardens at 2.40 pm.
The Service will commence at 3.00pm at St. Michael’s Parish Church. If you are not able to walk with the parade.

On Tuesday 11th November at 11.00 am a Two Minute Silence, signalled by the firing of a maroon, will be observed at the War Memorial on Monmouth Street.

The Annual General Meeting of the Lyme Regis branch will take place from 19:30 hrs
On Thursday November 27th at the Woodmead Halls, Lyme Regis. All members are invited to attend.

There is a folder in the Lyme Regis Library containing information relevant to the Lyme Regis Branch including a copy of the Royal Charter and the Branch Rules. The current Royal Charter is being revised at present and a new issue should be available in October 2008. The Branch rules will then be amended to reflect these changes.

Kilmington Branch Visit to the Historic Dockyard Portsmouth

Medical Centre Taxi Service

A medical centre taxi service organised by the branch is available for all eligible beneficiaries .

To use this service just ring Matt Prowse on 01297 442222. Identify yourself as an eligible beneficiary. The account will then be sent to Ania Driver our Welfare Secretary.

The service is for the surgery in Kent House and the Medical Centre Uplyme road.

For longer journeys. Dorchester, Exeter contact either Ania Driver 07971 631380, Chairman Ken Whetlor 01297 442311 or the President Cecil Quick 01297 442511 when arrangements will be made for those journeys.

Too often illnesses among beneficiaries go unnoticed. So please if you hear of a beneficiary who is sick or needs help of any kind ring any of the numbers above. This will give us a chance to help and make a visit if necessary.

I have often been asked about the memorial to HMS Formidable sank in 1915 off the coast of Lyme Regis This is more noticable now especially when people are trying to trace there family history. It is looked after by the Royal British Legion and the Town Council . Every year in November on Remembrance weekend a short prayer is said at the grave side and for the other service graves in the cemetery and poppys laid .

We would also like to thank you for allowing the existing Committee members to serve you for another year and, in the case of myself and the new Membership Secretary for giving us the chance serve you for the first time.
We would like to welcome those members who have volunteered to join the committee. We look forward to seeing you at as many events as you can attend.
New Branch members are always welcome. Anyone can become a member, you don't have to have served in the Armed Forces. All we ask is that you have an interest in promoting the welfare of our service and ex-service personel, and their dependents.

Polish memorial update.

Following a number of conversations between the Royal British Legion, the Polish Embassy, Magna Housing and our MP, the first steps have been taken to restore the Polish Air Force memorial on Anning Road.

On Sunday, a small team of Royal British Legion committee members cleared the site of weeds, pruned the roses and made the memorial stone more visible to the public.

David Manners of the Royal British Legion said: “on Saturday 10th November at 1200, the stone is to be blessed by a Polish clergyman from London in the presence of the Rt. Hon Oliver Letwin MP, the Mayor Councillor sally Holman, officials from Magna Housing (on whose land the memorial lays), Legion members and hopefully, some Polish Air Force veterans.

Several thousand Polish airmen died on our behalf during WWII and we think it is only fitting that this humble memorial, which I believe to be the only one in south- west England, is given the respect it deserves.
